It was the locals of the area who first discovered that the fine, needle-like leaves of the Rooibos (Red Bush) plant made a tasty, aromatic tea and red in color (Rooibos tea). In 1904, Benjamin Ginsberg, a Russian immigrant and pioneer in the area, became interested in Rooibos and realized its marketing potential. He started trading it from the people of the mountains and selling it. By 1930, a certain Dr. P. le Fras Nortier, a well known medical doctor and nature lover, had discovered the value of Rooibos as an agricultural product. Due to his and some of his friends' enthusiasm, other farmers became interested in the cultivation of Rooibos and soon production started.
